What Between does well
Between has been around for more than ten years, and it does one simple thing: it keeps the two of you separate from everyone else. Your chat isn't sitting between your group chats and your work messages. Your photos aren't lost in a camera roll full of screenshots.
The chat supports voice messages and stickers. The photo album sorts by date and place, which is nicer than it sounds when you're trying to find a trip from three years ago. There's also an anniversary tracker, countdowns and a shared calendar.
Between lists a $2.99 monthly purchase. Its App Store description quotes $13.99 annually, while its purchase list includes $24.99 annually. Those figures do not establish which offer you will receive. Check the renewal price in the app; paid features advertised include themes, longer media and ad removal.
Where DreamDuo is different
DreamDuo looks forward instead of back.
You set up goals together, from a house deposit to a wedding checklist to a habit you're both trying to keep. You each add progress, and the app tells you whether you're on track. Photos, links and files get saved to the goal they belong to, so the inspiration for your kitchen lives with the kitchen savings goal.
It also has a few things built for keeping plans alive:
- Secret contributions that your partner only sees when you reveal them.
- Future letters, locked until a date or a finished goal.
- The Sunday Summit, a five minute weekly check-in.
- A daily question, plus streaks that unlock new question packs at 3, 7, 14, 30, 60 and 100 days.
What DreamDuo doesn't have is a full chat app. It has quick nudges with text, photos and sounds, but you'll keep doing your everyday chatting wherever you already do it.
Which one should you pick?
Pick Between if you want a private corner for the two of you, and you don't already have a chat app you both like. Its private messaging and shared media are the main reason to choose it.
Pick DreamDuo if you're happy chatting where you already chat, and what you're missing is a way to follow through on the plans you make.
